Bexar County Jail (Detention Center) held an average of about 3,800 prisoners in 2012, making it the third-largest in the state. Total Jail’s Capacity (Main Facility and Annex): 4,563 detainees. The average jail detainee population is approximately 3,500 daily.

The staff is led and directed by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in the public interest. Medical care is provided by University Health Systems, Correctional Health Care Services. Detainee and staff food services are provided by Aramark.

How to send mail to an inmate?

Mail for an inmate in the Bexar County Jail should be sent to the following address:

Mail is collected and delivered five (5) days per week (Monday through Friday) except on Federal holidays. Detainees may receive letters in any quantity; however, when contraband is mailed in letters (combs, cigarettes, non-acceptable or excessive photos, and other items deemed inappropriate or contraband, etc.) all of the contents of the mail will be returned to sender with a mail disposition notice indicating the reason the correspondence was not deliverable.

How to visit an inmate?

Visitation Days and Times

All inmates are allowed two (2) twenty (20) minute visits per week. Out-of-town residents who reside further than 150 miles from San Antonio will be allowed a 30 minute visit. Residence will be verified at the time of the visit during normal visitation hours.

All adult visitors must have a current and valid identification card. Children may visit on the weekend only and must be accompanied by an adult (no more than two children at a time).

A visitor must be on the inmate’s visitation list with the exception of immediate family members during the first five days of incarceration. During the first five days of incarceration family members may visit on any designated visitation day during normal visitation hours. No exceptions after the fifth day of incarceration. All visitors, including out-of-town visitors, must be listed on the inmate’s visitation list.

Numbered tickets are issued to visitors from 6:30a to 1:30p on Saturdays and Sundays, and from 11:30a to 7:30p on Mondays and Tuesdays. All visitors who have received a numbered ticket will be allowed to complete their visit. All visitors will be required to fill out a visitation pass completely. If the visitation pass is incomplete, the visitor will not be allowed to complete their visit.

Adult and Children Visitors

  • A – L – On Saturday from 7:00a to 2:00p, adults and children shall be permitted to visit. Adults do not have be accompanied by a child in order to obtain a visit.
  • M – Z – On Sunday from 7:00a to 2:00p, adults and children shall be permitted to visit. Adults do not have be accompanied by a child in order to obtain a visit.

Adult Visitors Only

inmates whose last names begin with the letters:

  • A – L – On Monday from 12:00p to 8:00p, only adults may visit. No children permitted
  • M – Z – On Tuesday from 12:00p to 8:00p, only adults may visit. No children permitted.

Wednesday through Friday from 12:00p to 8:00p: Expanded visitation for attorneys, law enforcement, probation, parole, ministry, and social services agencies and officials.
